Moissanite vs Diamond, the Ultimate Guide

When it comes to fine jewelry, diamonds have long been synonymous with luxury. However, an increasingly popular rising star is moissanite - a stunning gemstone that offers several compelling advantages, often making it a superior choice to diamonds.

What is Moissanite?
Moissanite is a rare, naturally occurring gemstone composed of silicon carbide. Often referred to as the "gemstone from the stars," it was first discovered by Nobel Prize-winning French chemist Henri Moissan in 1893, inside a meteorite in Arizona. Due to its rarity in nature, most moissanite today is lab-grown using advanced technology, which enhances its brilliance to a level that rivals - and sometimes even surpasses that of diamonds. Unlike diamonds, moissanite requires no mining, resulting in a significantly smaller carbon footprint and less environmental impact.

Moissanite vs. Diamond: Key Differences
Both moissanite and diamonds are excellent choices, but a few important distinctions can help guide your decision.

1. Brilliance and Sparkle
Moissanite has a higher refractive index (2.65) compared to diamonds (2.42), giving it more sparkle, fire, and brilliance in any light.

2. Durability and Hardness
While diamonds are the hardest natural substance, rated 10 on the Mohs scale, moissanite follows closely with a hardness rating of 9.25 - 9.5. This makes it more durable than sapphires, rubies, and emeralds, and highly suitable to withstand everyday wear and tear.

3. Cost
One of the most significant benefits of moissanite is its affordability. Moissanite offers the beauty and brilliance of diamonds at 80-90% less of the cost, allowing you to invest in striking pieces and desired stone sizes without straining your budget.

4. Ethical Sourcing and Sustainability
While diamonds have a complex history, including the issue of conflict diamonds, lab-grown moissanite is conflict-free and environmentally friendly, offering a guilt-free option without compromising on quality or beauty.

5. Color and Clarity
Though diamonds are often valued for their colorless appearance, moissanite provides exceptional clarity and an eye-catching brilliance that rivals even the finest natural diamonds.

Why Moissanite?

It is our designer Julia's personal favorite gemstone, considering the price-performance ratio together with other factors:

1. Exceptional Value: Moissanite delivers unmatched sparkle at a fraction of the cost of a mined diamond, allowing you to purchase larger stones and expand your jewelry collection while saving for other important priorities in life.

2. Sustainability: Lab-grown moissanite is both eco-friendly and conflict-free, addressing the ethical concerns often associated with diamond mining and reducing environmental impact.

3. Low Maintenance: Highly resistant to scratches and wear, moissanite is a low-maintenance gemstone that retains its brilliance for generations. With a 9.25 - 9.5 on the MOHs harness scale (diamond is 10), moissanite is perfectly durable for everyday wear.

4. Unmatched Brilliance: With more fire and sparkle than a diamond, moissanite truly stands out as a showstopper, commanding attention with its extraordinary brilliance.

Moissanite is not the same as a diamond. Although both can be grown in laboratories and can appear similar to the untrained eye, they are compositionally different: diamonds are made of carbon, while moissanites consist of silicon carbide. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamonds, which means it reflects more vibrant rainbow-like ‘fire’ when exposed to light. In terms of hardness, diamonds are tougher, scoring a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, while moissanite measures 9.25 - 9.5. Both stones exhibit dispersion and scintillation, and are good thermal conductors, they remain distinct materials. Moissanite is not a diamond substitute - just as an emerald isn’t. It is a gemstone with its own unique properties.
